Gardens, flowers, landscapes and seascapes are my constant inspiration. My paintings develop from preliminary sketches and photographs. A sketch book and a few pencils allow me to make quick drawings of a landscape or a flower I like. If there is time I will add a watercolour wash and make notes about light source, colours and time of day. Photographs are a good back up but not a complete solution as I find I observe so much more if I make a sketch. Despite planning the painting it invariably ends up, many layers later, looking completely different from its starting point.
I like to work in a variety of media but generally use acrylics, inks, watercolour, gouache or charcoal.
